Split-second rescue by James McKimmey -illustrated by John Beswick

I rather liked the way that Boy’s Own Paper bled the one colour to the edges of the pulpy-like paper. This illustration is by John Beswick. The always excellent Steve Holland has nothing much – but a lot more than anyone else I can find – on the artist. His name means that a search is hard work as the pottery JB is far better known!

John Beswick (?- ). Contributed to Look and Learn via Greystock and Marsh agency. Illustrated various titles for Hamlyn, including Mammals of the World (1970), Undersea Exploration (1971), Fortune Telling (1972), Spotlight on Wild Animals (1973) and, for Blackwells, Submarines (1973).

The ladder of luck by Gerald Wyatt

When browsing a copy of Boy’s Own Paper I found this unusual piece where some canny art director has added some extra arrows to add to the excitement! The illustration itself is by ‘Berto’ for whom I have no information but I’ll add something if I trip over the info – as is the case when browsing these magazines. I suspect he is Bertolli but can’t remember….
